O
the service clubs of the City have formulated plans for a "Youth Day" and have now
prepared tentative plans for the first week in February, 1956, to coincide with National
Youth Week. Before completing the final arrangements for the participation of the Senior
Class at Sequoia High School in Youth Day they would like to have the official approval
of the Redwood City Council.
City Manager holison stated that the Committee representing the Chamber of Commerce will
call on the Council in the very near future. Park & Recreation Commissioner Gold stated
that the Junior Chamber is acting with the Chamber of Commerce. Councilman Stout moved
that the Council look in favor on the program, seconded by Councilman Jones and carried.
COMMUNICATION FROM THE COUNTY ENGINEER REGARDING PROPOSED PAVING CENTER STRIP l ^HIPPLE AVENUE
WEST OF ALAM EDA DE LAS PJLGAS. This was in answer to the Council's letter of August 9,
1955. The County feel that shrub planting will not be appropriate in this strip and that
if any improvements are made the strip should be paved. At the time Whipple Avenue in
this area and the Alameda de las Pulgas, northerly of Whipple Avenue, were improved, the
g y Pp p
County and City shared the cost of the center strip improvement on the Alameda. It is
their feeling that the improvement of Whipple Avenue should also be done as a cooperative
project with the City and County each paying 50% of the cost. They are prepared to pro-
ceed on this basis, and will undertake to do the work at an estimated cost of $x3,300.00
if City will pay -
i the Ci ill a ree to one-half of the actual cost of the work, or, the Count
y agree P y , County in
turn will agree to pay one -half of the actual cost of the work if the City wishes to
administer the project.
Councilman Granger moved that the City proceed with the work, seconded by Councilman
Royer and carried. City Engineer was instructed to come back if there wasn't enough
money available to complete the job.
COMMUNICATION DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS REQUEST FOR CANCELLATION OF TAXES ON FREEWAY PROPERTY.
Councilman Royer moved approval of cancellation, seconded by Councilman Jones and carried.
Mayor Herkner asked the Clerk to read the letter that he received that was not on the agenda.
Mr. George Laurens, 1634 Kentfield Avenue, asked that a new hearing be allowed in regard
to the sub - station of the PG &E being located between Valota Road and Kentfield Avenue.
In his letter Mr. Laurens stated that since the meeting of October 10th some important
facts have been disclosed. Mr. Laurens appeared in person and stated that he and a couple
of his neighbors have cheded into the noise and radio interference caused by the sub-
station on Alameda de las Pupas in Menlo Park. They found that there is a steady hum
and din which can be heard over a 2"`0' radius. They do not want the sub - station on
Valota Road if they are going to have this continual noise.
This was followed by discussion after which Councilman Granger stated that the P.G. &E.
should be asked to clean up the insulators to prevent "slip- over" and then notify the
City Council so they can make a proper inspection of conditions and noises. City Attorney
Currie stated that the PG&E should be notified that the use permit was granted with the
knowledge that there would be no interference with radio or TV and there would not be any
noise caused by the sub - station. Councilman Jones moved that the City Attorney write the
letter to PG &E telling them of the conditions attached to the use permit, seconded by
Councilman Stout and carried. The City Clerk was authorized to contact the PG &E regarding
the clean -up of the Menlo Park sub - station and notifying the Council so they could make
an inspection.
Claims 17531 to 17662, totaling 4249,774.29, were ordered paid on motion of Councilman Stout,
