Royer moved that_the.City Engineer. be authorized to put. red rock down to <br /> help the .people. in_ the _vicinity of .Poplar Avenue,_ seconded_. by Councilman Britschgi and <br /> carried. <br /> City Clerk read le.t.te.r_ from _L.awrence.G. Brian in regard. to meeting. wi_th.Mr. Sproul in which <br /> they discussed_ building... of tide.,..gates_ and. pumping.._ fa.cilities..on.Redwood Creek in the <br /> vicinity of. Bayshore Highway.. _. The.. ,Commit.tee_. in . stated. that after listening <br /> 1 <br /> to Mr. Sproul's ideas regarding...construc.tion _ of...the . tide..gate,...pumping..plant, and the <br /> schedule. of..const.ruction w.hich..he.. proposed,..it . is the. consensus of opinion that Mr. <br /> Sproul presented no.. concrete information to show that it.would be possible for him to <br /> construct an adequate tide gate structure and pumping plant to prevent flooding in the <br /> downtown area of Redwood City in the event of heavy rains this coming winter. Mr. <br /> Sproul presented no. construction, plans or specifications whatsoever :. consequently it <br /> would be impossible to_ even approximate_ .the cost of.. the structure he proposes. Council- <br /> man Jones moved acceptance of the report, seconded by Councilman Royer and carried. <br /> Cit! Engineer._ Jain stated. that the P. G. & E. had submitted a. deed for the right -of -way on <br /> the proposed sub- station.subje.ct to checking of description.. Councilman Spillers moved <br /> Clerk be.authorized.to acce t.the deed_sub ..t <br /> p jec to checking. of description, seconded by <br /> Councilman_Stout and carried. . <br /> USE PERMIT granted by the Planning Commission. J. Harrison reconstruct non - conforming house <br /> at 601 Douglas Avenue. Mayor Herkner stated that. the.contrac_tor, through some misunder- <br /> standing,. had raised. the house part way and then was.topp.ed.. Some action should be done <br /> to.. help these people .so. they. wo.uidn' t_ have to wait... There. were no protests at the <br /> Planning Commission meeting. .Councilman Spillers moved that the Council has no object- <br /> ions to the work being completed, seconded by Councilman Granger and carried. The <br /> house is being raised to street level only. <br /> Mr. 0. J. White, Western Stores, requested permission to hold a loss of lease sale at 2625 <br /> Broadway. They have approximately 655,000 inventory that must be liquidated by January <br /> 1st, 1956. Western Auto would also like to state that they are not leaving Redwood City <br /> but must. s.ecure. another. lease to continue to serve the people here. This was followed <br /> by general discussion_ regarding the. time of year this sale was being instigated. The <br /> Council- was of the, opinion.. that. this.. particular type. of sale, would not be fair to the <br /> other merchants.during.the Christmas shopping days. <br /> Councilman Gr.anger..mov.ed_,.sec.onded.by Councilman Britschgi, .that.the request be denied <br /> inasmuch as they do_ have other s. tores in .the vicinity which.the.y..could use for an <br /> outlet to get rid of their merchandise.. City. Attorney stated that the Council could <br /> deny this request.inasmuch._as it_ 13 not presented in accordance with the ordinance. <br /> Councilman Spillers stated that after December 31st Mr. White could askfor the sale <br /> and it would be granted.
