St�ategic Initiative: <br /> Youth <br /> Strate�ic Goals • Conduct a minimum of eight Gang Prevention and Awareness <br /> Presentations, reaching all middle and high schools <br /> The Department's juvenile specialist has conducted gang awareness <br /> presentations to the Sequoia High School District (parents and students) <br /> Dcvclop and maintain and the Counseling Advocacy for Teens (counselors). The police <br /> programs that support department has planned other presentations in the near future for Hawes <br /> `�outh dcvclopmcnt, School, Woodside High School, Adolescent Counseling Services, <br /> cducation, hcalth, and Sequoia High School, Taft School, and the City's community academy <br /> cnrichmcnt program (PACT). These presentations help parents, teachers, and those <br /> who work with youth to understand both the risks of gangs and the <br /> indicators that youth are becoming involved in gangs. For youth, it helps <br /> to dispel the mystique and lure of gangs. <br /> • Grant funded resource officers at Hoover and Kennedy schools will <br /> Crcatc and nurturc make at least five home visits to chronically absent students, teach <br /> partncrships and four gang awareness classes, and attend two school staff ineetings <br /> collaboration that providc and five parent meetings <br /> for critical youth scrviccs <br /> and child carc The police department's school resource officers have made 13 home <br /> visits, taught three gang awareness classes at Hoover Middle School, <br /> attended two school staff ineetings, and attended five parent meetings. <br /> The police department's school resource officers are on track to <br /> complete the objective. Gang awareness classes are pending at <br /> Kennedy Middle School. <br /> Engagc youth <br /> respcctfully, • Locate and return 300 truant youth (contacts) to the school they <br /> as an intcgral part attend by June 30, 201 1 <br /> of thc Rcdwood City <br /> communit`� Patrol and school resource officers have made a combined 133 truancy <br /> contacts with juveniles who were then returned to school. Additionally, <br /> there have been 20 truancy citations issued, bringing the total number of <br /> truancy contacts to 153. The police department utilizes a part time <br /> truancy officer along with regular patrol officers to locate and return <br /> truant youths to their schools. They also team with the department's <br /> juvenile specialist to handle serious truancy matters. Based on the <br /> number of truancy contacts to date, it's expected that the objective will <br /> be met by the end of this school year. <br />
