6A
Page 28
Main Street. First we need to see if there is interest in the City Council and then have a
study session.
MIS (Codding/Radcliffe) Proposed that the Planning Commission recommend, based on
the presentations and discussions here this evening, the need for housing in Redwood
City and the number of units that could be built at this location and the proximaty of the
downtown that the Planning Commission recommend to the City Council to initiate a
General Plan Amendment from the existing General Plan land use designation of
"Commercial - Office Park" to "Heavy Commercial. Mixed Use" for the property located
at 333 Main Street; and
Planning Commission recommend that the City Council initiate a Zoning Map
Amendment form the existing "Industrial Park" (IP) Zoning District to the "General
Commercial - Combined Residential" (CG-G) Zoning District for property located at 333
Main Street.
Motion Passed 4-2 (for: SeybertlRadcliffe/Cronin/Codding)
(against: Gee/Paulson)
Commissioner Gee stated that he does not support the motion because he is opposed to
spot zoning and that this needs further study in a broader context.
Commissioner Paulson sees the area changing in the future, but at this point defers to
what is in the staff report that states "in order to contemplate a land use change that
includes housing, the area needs significant consideration as a whole, and it should be a
result of policy in the General Plan update."
Commissioner Cronin stated that his preference would be to look at this in a bigger
context and is also sensitive to spot zoning and does not think it is the way that the city
should conduct business normally. Preference would be to have resources and the time
to look at the whole section of this area and not just this particular property, but this may
be a good alternative.
Commissioner Radcliffe is also not in favor of spot zoning and agreed that this is a way
to get things started and think that the whole area needs to be looked at and not just this
one piece of property.
Chair Seybert stated it is important to use the term spot zoning carefully and will support
this recommendation because it is not spot zoning and believes it is a catalyst for what
will happen around it . -
-
MATTERS OF COMMISSION INTEREST
~ General Plan Update
eneral Plan Subcommittee will be spending time revisiting the Guiding
Princl early May, 2006 and May 16 will be the next step with the
visioning proc
~ Subcommittee Appointme
Staff would like one of the Plann ommissioners to sit on a five person
subcommittee to interview and recom etai! vendors for Courthouse
Square.
