The matter wa.s ordered plaoec� on; agenda <br /> ' Oommunication was received from City Manager Blom_in regard to the work week for <br /> employees in the water, sewer, etreet and park depa.rtments engaged in Yield <br /> �vork. He reaommended that the regular work week be reduced from 44 houre <br /> to 40 hours, Monday through Friday; that overtime accumulated on Sundaye, <br /> ' . holidays and emergency calls during the night, under orders of oompetent <br /> authority, be paid for in cash at a rate equal to one and one-ha1Y timee the <br /> employee's equivalent hourly rate; and that overtime aocumlated as a reault <br /> of the extenaion of the normal work day or on Saturdaye be paid in oaeh at <br /> a rate equal to the equivalent hourly rate of the employee. Oity Manager <br /> • Blom advised this would involve an amendment to the rules and regulatione oi <br /> the personnel eyatem. Councilman Granger aeked if thie matter shoul�d not be <br /> referred to the Board oY Review and was.adnised by City Manager Blom triat it <br /> had not been done so. He further recommended that if the Councll approned <br /> tae recommendation it be made ePfective as of the preaent payroll period, <br /> He advised that he was a meeting oY the Hoard of Review to have.. <br /> their asaistance in making up the change in the rulee so tnat it will be <br /> ' completed before the checke are drawn Yor the presenL payroll period. Ooun- <br /> cilman Werder asked if conformed to plans uaed in other cities. City <br /> Manager Blom advised that it was a trend that was being folloaeed and that <br /> trie City of Palo Alto had been on a 4Q hour week for over.a qear. It was <br /> the opinion of Mayor Hilton the plan should be approned subject to the <br /> ' approval of tne Board of Review. Councilman Werder moved, seaonded by <br /> Councilman $wift, that the recommendation of the City Manager be approved <br /> aubfect to the approval oY the Hoard of Review. Under the question, Counoil- <br /> • man Qranger wanted it understood that the Council was attempting to help the <br /> employees to solve their problems. City Manager Blom advised that the plan <br /> ..had been suggested by the employeea theme and that they �rere satiefied, <br /> Trie time and one-half Por overtime on Sundaye, holidays or emergency work <br /> ' had been recommended by the City Manager. It wae deeided that a meeting would <br /> ' be held Monday, Auguat 26th, <br /> City Manager Blom requeated the Oouncilmen to advise him as to the means of trane- <br /> portation ttiey wiahed to take to the League oY Californi8 Citles� Convention <br /> in,.3an Diego in 8eptember, <br /> Mr. Louis Behrens, a resident oP Edgewood Park, appeared before the Oouncil in <br /> regard to the matter of water preaeure in that dietrict and aeked that some- <br /> • thing defini'te be done to improve the.eystem.
