. JULY 2011 THE BELMONT CREEK CHANNEL MAINTENANCE PROJECT—
 HABITAT MITIGATION AND MONITORING PLAN
D. Location of Project and Associated Mitigation Site
The proposed Maintenance Project site is located parallel to Old County Road just southeast of
Harbor Boulevazd, in unincorporated San Mateo County. The associated Mitigation Site is
located on the southwest bank of Belmont Creek adjacent to the City of Belmont's
Corporation Yazd located at 110 Sem Lane, Belmont, California, 94002. The Mitigation Site
is approximately 0.4 stream miles downstream of the Highway 101 crossing and is located
adjacent to and opposite of recreational bay trails. The Mitigation Site is located within the
City of Redwood City, San Mateo County, California (See Figures 1 through 3).
E. Brief Summary of Overall Project
The Maintenance Project consists of an approxunately 240-foot long segment of Belmont
Creek within the County maintained road right-of-way. The purpose of the Maintenance
Project is to improve flood flow capacity through vegetation and sediment management by
removing approxunately 47 cubic yards of accumulated sediment and aquatic vegetation
from the channel bottom, bank repair, as well as trimming the willows overhanging the
creek.
Belmont Creek originates in rural residential hills within the City of Belmont, and flows
through low- to medium-density residential azeas, often through an underground culvert
system, and daylights just upstream of the Harbor/Industrial unincorporated area of San
Mateo County (see Figure 2). Belmont Creek enters San Francisco Bay approximately 3.7
miles downstream from the Maintenance Project site.
To satisfy requirements set forth by the Regional Board, the Maintenance Project impacts will be
mitigated through the planting of ten coast live oak trees (Quercus agrifolia) and the removal of
invasive nonnative vegetation, primarily sweet fennel (Foenicu[um vulgare), as detailed in this
fIIvfMP.
II. GOAL OF MITIGATION
The goal of this HMMP is to enhance upland creekside habitat as mitigation for the 1600 squaze-feet
(0.036 acres) of aquatic vegetation temporarily unpacted by maintenance activities. Impacted
vegetation includes common horsetail (Equisetum arvense), watercress (Nasturtium ocinale),
F:\users\u[ility\warershedrorectionPERM[TS\WPS2010-009 Belmont Creek Channel
Maintenance\Sediment RemovalRegional Board\MitigationBelmont_HMMP.docx - 2 -
