JULY 20ll THE BELMONT CREEK CHANNEL MAINTENANCE PROJECT—
 HABITAT MITIGATION AND MONITORING PLAN
and cattails (Typha sp.) within the Belmont Creek channel, and is expected to grow back by
spring 2012.
III. FINAL SUCCESS CRITERIA
To mitigate for the temporary loss of vegetation, ten coast live oak trees will be planted along a
section of Belmont Creek above ordinary high water. Success of the Mitigation Plan will be
based on 100% coast live oak survival rate. Coast live oak is an evergreen tree, native to
California, with a typical lifespan of 40 to 110 yeazs. Coast live oak matures at 20 years with a
typical crown diameter of 20 feet. At maturity, the vegetation coverage is expected Yo reach
approximately 3,200 square-feet (0.073 acres), fulfilling the 2:1 vegetation replacement ratio as
required by the Regional Board. The trees will provide nesting and foraging habitat for
migratory birds and small maminals and will improve aesthetic quality along adjacent
recreational trails (USDA, 2009).
IV. MITIGATION SITE
A. Size and Existing Conditions of Mitigation Site
The planned Mitigation Site is approximately 35-feet wide and 200-feet long (0.16 acres),
and is located on an upland levee adjacent to Belmont Creek (See Figure 3). Current site
conditions consist of upland invasive weeds such as sweet fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and
unidentified non-native grasses. Patches of sea fig (Carpobrotus sp.) aze present along the
bank. The creek channel is tidal at this point and is dominated by pickleweed (Salicornia
virginica) and invasive cordgrass (Spartina spp.)
B. Ownership Status
The City of Redwood City is.the owner of the Mitigation Site.
V. IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
A. Planting Plan
1.
