i
There were some interviewees who said they did not kr ow whether or not $2 million could
I be- raised or $4 million, but they felt comfortable in the fact that major dollars could be
raised, probably some where around $2 million. Four respondents were very optimistic
saying that they felt that in today's economy with the types of individuals and companies in
the Redwood City area that at least $4 to $5 million could be raised. Overall, the
individuals interviewed felt confident that something between $2 and $3.5 million could be
raised for the project.
C. Project awareness acceptance and support.
A significant number of interviewees believed that the Redwood City Police Department
provides great role models and felt that PAL could be of service to all of Redwood City's
youth, whether they are in the general neighborhood of low income areas or elsewhere.
One interviewee commented that almost all kids are at some risk regardless of their
economic status. Most community leaders and those interviewed wanted to see a kid's
program that is well structured and supervised, and strongly supports the new PAL
building, in the Taft school neighborhood. Only one interviewee expressed the fact that
they were uncomfortable with leaving their child with a group that might be classified as
troubled kids, with only one adult supervising. This clearly indicates the fact that the
community sees PAL as being a valuable asset and many wanted to be more informed
about the activities of PAL, and indicated their interest in becoming involved.
Several expressed concerns about whether or not PAL was duplicating facilities that might
be available for children, including the Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA. This leads us to
believe that a stronger marketing program, related not only to the image, but the
awareness of PAL throughout Redwood City needs to be conducted and surely certain
opinion makers in the community must be targeted and buy into the project. Nearly
everyone interviewed felt that it was important for PAL to have a facility of its own.
However, they felt that the Case Statement must be refined in order to answer more
questions concerning location and programs that would be headquartered in the building
itself.
5
