6.1.1. - Page 3 education program that meets the California State requirements for PE. Training sessions will focus on three different areas: 1. Community & leadership development 2. Teaching methods 3. Program curriculum Goal 4- PE Components: The PE Plus program for Redwood City schools is designed to ensure that the social, emotional, physical, and learning needs of the students are being met during their time in PE. The program will provide students with the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, behavioral skills, and confidence to participate in physical activity and aims to establish active lifestyles among students that continue into and throughout their adult lives. Physical activity is promoted through providing a physical and social environment that enables safe and enjoyable participation in physical activity through a planned and developmentally appropriate physical education and nutrition education curricula and instruction that meets the PE standards from kindergarten through 5th grade. Goal 5- Program Evaluation: Sequoia Healthcare District Program Director will consult with staff from John Gardner Center to develop assessment tools and will work with PRCS, PCC, and RCSD to conduct baseline assessments and ongoing monitoring and reassessments. Redwood City School District Wellness Coordinator will assist with survey execution and data collection. Data will be used to measure program quality and impact, share outcome information with stakeholders, make necessary modifications, and use best practices to cultivate and expand program. Goal 6- Sustainability: Program is designed to assure positive changes are sustained. Goal 7- Program Growth: Program is expected to expand program to 3 days per week at all 14 elementary schools by year three with financial contributions from additional sources. ANALYSIS Due to State budget cuts to the Redwood City School District (RCSD), incredibly hard choices were made and ultimately physical education teachers were eliminated at most RCSD schools. With the generous financial support of the Sequoia Healthcare District (SHCD), the Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC) was hired to provide a comprehensive physical education program to students for the past three years. Though the program has been successful, the funding provided by SHCD limited their scope of work to just seven schools once a week. At last month's SHCD Board of Directors meeting, they approved the expansion of funding through their "Healthy Schools Initiative" and the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department was approached as the provider to expand capacity while using our health, wellness and youth development expertise.
