8.A. - Page 316
Statemenf an FinerAvenue Aesthetics
1 am a Finger Avenue resident or neighbvr, wo walics, bicycles or otherrxise enjoys the
Fnger Avenue sti-eetscape. Iave seen tlie plans for tle McGawan n.ine-Lat develapment, and
concude that it wil substantially degrade tle existing visal character and qaality of the site
and its subundings.
What is important aesthetically about my neighborhood 'as the semirural character af the
north side of Finger Avenue, withnany homes set far back from tne stxeet. The appearance af
large amounts of open space with mature,aId growth t•ees, pxovides a striking backdrop to
the homes. The contrast between the north side of Finger Avenue and its soutH side, with its
many quaint, early 20i'centuiy bungalows and cottages, is something that's unique ta
Redrvood City and treasured by its residents.
Exarnples of how tle Finger Aenue Project siiificantly degrades the aesthetics af our
neigfborhood are:
• Con,struction of two hornes with wide two-story facades set back tlie minimum
alawable distance fram the street, Tlere are ro houses that large set that close to the
street an,ywhere in our neighboxhaod, -
• Nowhere ese on Finger Avenue are homes this large placed an lots this smai.
• AlI of the hornes are of simiar size and all cwo-story, as opposed to the rnix af home
sizes and heights that are representatir+e of the north side of Fingee•Avenue.
+ Most of these nine homes will be yriewable from the publio streek. There is little apen
space and the lames are only set back a sirall distance fi•om tIe nrrow that sewes
them{svme from 3f—6ft from the alleyway.) Nowlere in aur neigliborliood are
hauses situated in this fashion.
• A developrnent this densely packed is incompatible with the presence af large mature
trees on the site. The eventual loss of tlese trees wili be irreversible.
Te breakup af te north side of Finger Ave. by creating two nEw interections. The
narrovv alleyway built for the deveopment fatls to integrate with Finger Avenue by nat
having a sidewatk or planting strip against the roadway.
• The one-way a[leyway will reguire street signs on Finger Ave to direct traffic, fw-ther
compromising tte character of the north side of the street.
The overall mass and scale af tus developrnent is completely out of place in aur
neigborhood, out of character foz•the naih side of FingerAenue and it will ony lead to
further degradation of the unique character and cuaity of our street.
Name _ -.-% T`/
Address . j, GI Date ' /
