":rt is the opinion of your committee that the residents of this
City are entitled to P modern, rogulpr and dependable bus service
operating on n fairly frenvent basis.
Your committen ]so feels thnt two addifionai factors reaulre
the mnintenanon of P modern bus system:
(a) V is anticipated that this ares, will ultimately be served by
rapid transit service, -Itbar a new system or 2n improved, commu-
tor oriented Southern PoWic system. This will rem - uire a fooder
line to be successful and gill be complimentary to p local- bus
Oystem.
(0) The nnturni growth in area of the City, as evidenced by the
present 9edwood Shores development, will support a bus system and
? bus system will intagrate the new residents and mrAntoin hod.-
uond ?Yty as the basic shopping aren for our resIdents.
Because of these factors it is our recommendation thnt the City
initipto 7 study for dotermtntng the feasibility of acquIrIn7
modern transportation equipment with the operction of , bus
system by anntroct and under the direct rontrni of the City.
A prollmirnry study by your rommitt-e ind!cates that an initial
capital outlay of less than 05,000 may be required with con-
tract aywnsys for less than the minimum subsidy proposal from the
present Trpnsit Company. Direct City control would assure the
mprkln7 of bus stops, the proviHinq of an adocuate advortisin-
Kud7at and a routing schedule that in best suited to the needs of
our community and not dependent upon buses originating from Palo
Alto.
TN STR,,IPIARY: Tt is our recommendation that (1) the present bus opern-
Mh 561 -Be subsidized, that (2) the present application not be
opposed An the absence of any determination that the transit line
is not in fact operating at a loss and that Q) the Staff imme-
diately initiate a detailed study so that the City may provide the
needed service under City control." (For full Text see Clerks File -
Poninsulp Tronsit System)
Councilman FarYner further expanded on Committee's recommendation that City buy
busses and then loose to q transportation company with possibly a prrtiad subsidy,
-hich suhsldV wnuld be far less thRn one suggested by the Peninsula Trqnsit Oompany.
Discussion hold an recommendation mode by Committee and SON fopsibility of pur-
chsV7 busses.
Councilman Cringer moved to accept report of Transportation Committee and approv-
tho three recommonda tions mpde: ( :i) That the present bus operation not be sub-
sidizod, that (2) the present Parliaption not be opposed in thn Pbsenco of Pny
Wtorminntion that the transit line is not in fact operstin7 at a loss and th7t
(0) the Stiff Immediatply be7in a further investig, tion Ps to fePsibility Pnd
possibility of purchnsin7 bussps, PH report ba -k at Council Study Mee tW7 of lay
qth, s-conded by Counn4man W-ymowth and carried.
