Re-name 49er Field as McGarvey Field; re-name McGarvey Field to Guida Field Pop Warner representative Steve Zweig explained that he received the staff memo and shared the suggestions with the members of the Guida family. He stated the family was in favor of Suggestion #5. Gary Karis, former Pop Warner player and coach, spoke in favor of naming McGarvey Field in honor of Frank Guida. The Commissioners discussed the various suggestions and felt that Mr. Guida made significant contributions to the Redwood City community and was deserving of having a ballfield named after him. The Commissioners expressed concern that: although they did not know the history of the McGarvey family, they did not want to offend the McGarvey family by removing the name from the field; there would be confusion by the public if the fields were re-named; and they wanted to recognize Mr. Guida with something more important than just naming the turf at McGarvey field in his honor. Vince Truscelli noted that when he was director of the Police Youth Club in 1958, Frank Guida ran the Junior 49ers Football program on the current 49er Field. M/S Swope/Truscelli: To recommend to City Council that the 49er Field be re-named in honor of Frank Guida. Motion passed unanimously. ITEM 2 — APPROVAL OF RECOMMENDATION TO CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING" JULY IS PARK & RECREATION MONTH" Director Centeno noted that our department received many compliments at the June 25 City Council meeting for our wonderful facilities, programs and the many department activities happening this Summer. M/S Swope/Truscelli: That the Commission recommends to City Council that July be proclaimed Park and Recreation Month. Motion passed unanimously. ITEM 3 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS -Park Needs Assessment Chairperson Slusser reported on the progress of the sub-committee and the consultant. He asked the Commission to consider moving our July meeting from July 25 to July 18 so the project will stay on its established timeline. M/S Swope/Truscelli: To move the Commission's 7uly meeting to 7uly 18. Motion passed unanimously.
