ITEM 4 -A.C.T.S. AWARD
Commissioner Moran reported that she, Commissioner Ball and Supervisor
Hannon met to discuss and evaluate the A.C.T.S. Award program. The
positive aspects of the program were that it gave young artists a chance to
display their art work and it rewarded those students on their talent. The
negatives were difficult communication between the High School District and
the teachers in disseminating information; difficulty in judging the entries,
especially the performing arts; low participation from students; time
intensive for staff; not knowing if students spent their money on art-related
supplies or classes. She said the committee recommended that the
Commission discontinue the A.C.T.S. Award and use $200.00 of the allocated
funds to donate to the Sequoia Art Group to be presented to student artists at
their Spring Art Show. The funds could also be used for a lunch time concert
in the downtown area.
Commissioner Filippi said he agreed with the recommendation and thought
the funds could also be used for a new sign/banner for the Cultural
Commission's events. Commissioner Fischer said she felt the award should
continue but with recognition and a smaller monetary prize. Commissioner
Piulle said perhaps giving a gift certificate for art supplies instead of the larger
cash award.
M/S Filippi/Distefano: That the Commission table the A.C.T.S. Award for
this year.
Motion passed.
The following items were taken out of order:
ITEM 9 - SEQUOIA STATION ART
Commissioner Fischer reported that she and Commissioners Ball and
Distefano met with Charles Jany regarding possible sites for art in the Sequoia
Station area. Mr. Jany identified five possible art sites and the group visited
each site. Commissioner Fischer said that two sites are within the Sequoia
Station shopping complex, one is at the Cal-Train Station, one is on City
property near the bus shelters, and the other is located on City property on the
east side of the railroad tracks near the bike lockers. She noted that there are
no funds available for art at any of the locations including the Cal-Train site.
The Commissioners discussed the pros and cons of each site and where it
would get the most exposure. Commissioner Piulle said she would like to see
a piece of art on the other side of the tracks which would help attract people to
the downtown area.
