March 23-Project Read Tutor Training - 6-9pm
March 24-Project Read Tutor Training - 6-9pm
March 26-VITA tax assistance with basic forms - l0am-2pm
ITEM 3 - GRANT REQUEST- PIED PIPER THEATER
Burt Liebert of the Pied Piper Theater explained that the group is looking for a
building in downtown Redwood City to house their program. Currently the
group is renting space at the Art Center where they hold rehearsals and
drama classes. Because of space limitations in the Art Center building, the
group is unable to use the space full time. Mr. Liebert said the group
performed three plays in its first year of operation and is in need of
headquarters to hold their classes, build sets, hold rehearsals, and storage
space. He indicated the group would be very interested in expanding their
classes if they had additional space.
Commissioner Piulle asked about the requirement that downtown retail
space be used exclusively for retail businesses. Mr. Liebert said he spoke to
Gary Bonte of the Planning Departxnent who indicated that a use permit
would have to be obtained but he did not see any problem in getting the
permit approved. Mr. Liebert said he has researched several potential sites in
the downtown area and met with several of the landlords. Before he can sign
a lease for any building, Mr. Liebert explained he needed to know the status of
his grant request with the Cultural Commission.
Mr. Liebert explained his group has received grants from Target and the
Richardson family of $500.00 each. The group has put on three plays this year
and has used Foothill College, Burgess Theater, and McKinley School for
their performance sites. He explained the group is ideally looking for studio
space 20' wide by 100' deep in the downtown area. He said he is very
interested in the See's Candy Building. Chairperson Filippi said he contacted
the Redevelopment Agency regarding the theater group leasing the site and
was told that another youth group is also negotiating for the space.
M/S Piulle/Redington: To send a letter to See's recommending they consider
the application of the Pied Piper Theater group to
rent their building.
Motion passed.
M/S Piulle/Redington: To give rent money for six months to the Pied
Piper Theater (6 C«3 $200.00 = $1,200) and to have
them come back to the Commission with a report
of their progress in locating a new site. If they find
a new location, the $200.00 each month will
continue for the entire six month period.
