Carmel
ITEM 3 -CARRINGTON HALL
Assistant Superintendent Don Gielow of the Sequoia Union High School
District spoke to the Commission about his recent meeting with
Commissioner Fischer regarding Carrington Hall and the Commission's
desire to assist with its renovation. He said the facility is almost unusable due
to its current condition of disrepair. He explained that funds were received
from the Redevelopment Agency which were used to paint the entire school.
Funds were also received from a maintenance assessment district which
provided for the new landscaping and fencing along the El Camino side of the
campus. They are also in the process of renovating classrooms and are
hoping to build a new wing of classrooms with the proceeds of the sale from
the Ravenswood site.
Mr. Gielow explained that the District is very interested in working with
groups who would like to renovate Carrington Hall and is also interested in
working with the City to open up Carrington Hall for use by the entire
community. The District is currently awaiting the results of a structural
assessment of the building. He mentioned that the Redevelopment Agency
has o,ffered a small amount of money to assist with the renovation. The
Sequoia Alumni Association has helped to renovate the Japanese Tea Garden
and also assisted with renovation of a new entrance to the school.
Mr. Gielow estimated the cost to renovate the building would cost
approximately $2 million. He said that 300-400 people are now using the
Sequoia High School campus on the weekends as a result of opening up areas
for more community use. He also noted that the amount and cost of
vandalism in the District has gone down steadily over the last 20 years. He
felt there is a real need for a facility that could be used for school and
community events and that Carrington Hall could be that facility. A
conceptual design and feasibility study of Carrington Hall could be done for
approximately $2,000.00. Mr. Gielow mentioned the District can apply for
matching funds for modernization from the State but it would be a
minimum of 3-5 years before the funds would be received. He stated that
necessary direct classroom educational expenses are more of a priority than
Carrington Hall. He estimated that funds allocated for the renovation of
Carrington Hall are about 10 years away.
