Mr. Liebert said the group has reapplied to Target for a grant and they
anticipate receiving grants from other organizations. After their summer
performances are over in August, he intends to do more grant writing. The
Pied Piper Theater will be holding a benefit for the LaBerge Childcare Fund
on Saturday, July 23 at 11:OOam at the Burgess Theater and the group will
perform "Bremen Town Musicians". The group will also be holding a teen
performance on July 29 and 30 at the Burgess Theater. Mr. Liebert said 20 to
40 students are currently involved in their performances. They have 20
students in the junior program, 10 in the teen program and 60% of the
participants are Redwood City residents. Five students received partial
scholarships this year in the program and he estimated that the average
attendance per performance is 200 people.
Chairperson Filippi asked Mr. Liebert if the Commission decided to fund
specific performance costs rather than rental costs, could additional
information be provided to the Commission and Mr. Libert said yes. Mr.
Liebert said his group needs to put more effort into marketing of their
program. They currently distribute brochures and flyers to the community,
send out press releases to the newspapers, radio, and television stations but
ideally would like someone on their staff to handle all publicity full time.
Mr. Liebert explained the theater held two "Outreach Program" classes for
students, one at the school and one at the Art Center and they were very
successful.
Mr. Liebert explained the group is looking for a new location that is affordable
and would have a space for performances, storage, office space and perhaps
even eostume rentals. Chairperson Filippi thanked Mr. Liebert for his
presentation and advised him the Commission would vote on the matter
later in the meeting.
ITEM 4- CARRINGTON HALL UPDATE
Assistant Superintendent Don Gielow introduced Keith Bautista of DES
Architects, Inc. who performed a site inspection of Carrington Hall to
determine its structural integrity. Mr. Bautista said he reviewed the 1922
drawings of the building and also the 1935 construction plans when the
building was upgraded. He rated Carrington Hall on the seismic scale of "6"
and felt it was structurally sound and had a functional life of 100+ years. Mr.
Bautista felt the building could be brought up to code and still retain its
unique architectural design. He noted that a major structural study is needed
to determine specific problems within the building and estimated the cost of
this study would be $25,000-30,000 based on a figure of$20.00 to 25.00 per
square foot. Mr. Gielow stated an asbestos evaluation was done of Carrington
Hall several years ago and some asbestos was found to be encapsulated behind
a wall. Commissioner Piulle asked Mr. Bautista for something in writing
with the estimated costs of the structural seismic review. Chairperson Filippi
