noted that Pat Keller developed plans in 1976 to convert Carrington Hall to a
performing arts center at an estimated cost at that time of approximately
$600,000.
Frank Bravo of the Sequoia Alumni Association stated they are trying to get
the campus on the Register of Historic Places. If approved, grants are
available for historic site projects although funding is very competitive.
Redevelopment Funds may also be available for the renovation project. Mr.
Gielow said the Redevelopment Agency is aware of the School District's
needs because of a "wish list" they developed several years ago at the
Redevelopment Agency's request. Sequoia Principal Earl Walker stated they
would like to have a community meeting at Carrington Hall to explain the
proposed project. The Commissioners suggested holding a Special Meeting of
the Cultural Commission at Carrington Hall at the end of September or
beg'utning of October and invite the public and all other interested parties to
discuss the matter. The Commissioners felt they should take a leadership
role in the project and form a task force to develop plans for the meeting.
Chairperson Filippi felt this could be a cooperative effort with the School
District to make Carrington Hall into a performing arts center for Redwood
City. Commissioner Piulle noted the Commission's Cultural Element and its
recommendation to develop Carrington Hall into a cultural arts facility.
Supervisor Hannon suggested putting a sub-committee together to establish
the agenda for the meeting and methods for publicizing the event. Mr. Bravo
indicated that the Sequoia Alumni Association would be interested in
participating in the meeting. Mr. Walker suggested inviting the current and
future parents of Sequoia High School students. Other groups to be invited
include the Historic Resources Advisory Committee, Latino community
leaders, elementary schools, PTAs, Senior Affairs, Planning, and Port
Commissions. This matter will be placed on the August agenda to discuss the
meeting and possible members of the task force.
M/S Fischer/Distefano: To have a public meeting in early October to be held
on a Wednesday at Carrington Hall with one topic
entitled "The Future of Carrington Hall" and the
formation of a task force.
Motion passed.
Commissioner Piulle suggested forming a sub-committee to discuss the
future public meeting and report back at our August meeting. Chairperson
Filippi and Commissioners Fischer and Redington will be on the sub-
committee. Mr. Bautista said he would like to see the blueprints developed
by Mr. Keller and Mr. Bravo agreed to deliver them to Mr. Bautista.
