Dr. Balderas said he would like a commitment for dance/movement classes
at John Gill School to ensure his students would get exposure to this subject
matter. He invited the Cultural Commission to attend a John Gill School
BBQ to speak to students and their parents.
The Commissioners requested Ms. Bena to provide them with two different
grant proposals. One for the school program at John Gill and the other for a
public performance. They also suggested a possible third grant to provide a
performance for the students. The sub-committee will meet with Ms. Bena
and Dr. Balderas to attempt to formulate several appropriate grant
applications.
ITEM 2-CHRISTMAS CONCERT PROPOSAL
Commissioners Ball and Filippi met with Henry Use and Mitchell Klein of
the Peninsula Symphony to discuss a proposed Christmas concert/variety
show. Several members of the Peninsula Symphony would perform
including 15-16 members of the string section. The program would also
include a quintet, a boys' choir and local artists. The cost of the performing
groups for one holiday variety show would be approximately $3,500.00. The
Commission could charge $8.00-10.00 per ticket and hav the service clubs
help to sell tickets as fundraisiers. The total cost of the proposed event would
be approximately $6,000-7,000 with a ticket price of$8.50 per person.
M/S Distefano/Filippi: Vote to set aside up to $1,000.00 to provide some
music for this year's Christmas parade on December 2.
Motion passed.
ITEM 8 - ARTS AND THE CALIFORNIA ECONOMY
Information on this subject was included in the Commissioners' packets
explaining what the arts contribute to the California economy.
Commissioner Filippi noted the Arts Council has a variety of statistics on the
benefits of arts on education, children and the economy. Commissioner
Piulle will research the possibility of purchasing this book for the
Commission.
ITEM 9 - PERCENT FOR PUBLIC ART
Commissioner Saye presented a draft proposal to be sent to the Architectural
Advisory Committee and the Planning Commission. Several
Commissioners made comments on the text of the letter for some revisions.
The sub-committee will re-work the draft and will be come back to the
Commission for a full recommendation next month.
