,
The following items were taken out of order:
ITEM 8-REDWOOD CITY EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Barbara Pierce, parent volunteer with RESCUE, explained that their
organization began as an after school program in 1983 and they have now
shifted their focus to fundraising to provide enrichment activities for
Redwood City Schools. Last year they raised $22,000 in their fundraising
efforts. Ms. Pierce explained they would like to fund a district-wide music
program and have begun a fundraising activity by selling Christmas cards.
They have organized an art contest for school children and have received
over 700 entries from 13 schools and Garfield Charter School. The winners
selected will be featured on the Christmas cards for sale. The winning art
work will be on display at the Redwood City Art Center and the cards will also
be for sale there. RESCUE is also looking for grants to help supplement their
fundraising efforts.
ITEM 4-VINTAGE MUSIC THEATER GRANT REQUEST
Peter Weiglin and Jack Snider of Vintage Music Theater spoke about their
proposal for a ragtime musical performance at the Fox Theater during 1996.
Ticket price will be $15.00 each and $13.50 for seniors. They aze looking at
having a Saturday and Sunday performance over one weekend between the
period of August 15 and October 25, 1996. The Vintage Music Theater
Auxiliary has done some fund raising to help with their performance costs.
Commissioner Fischer asked if they have looked into using other venues that
would be less expensive such as Carrington Hall. Commissioner Filippi
explained that the guidelines for granting funds requires te applicant to
have a definite date and venue for their performance. He requested that
Vintage Music Theater return to the Commission in January with this
necessary information so the Commission could vote on their grant request
and Mr. Weiglin and Mr. Snider agreed to do so.
ITEM 5-OP'TIMIST CLUB GRANT REQUEST
Optimist Club President Ralph Garcia explained they were applying for funds
to help pay for groups who performed in the Optimist-sponsored Christmas
Parade on December 2 in downtown Redwood City. Due to a
miscommunication, the Optimist Club did not hear about the grant funds
available for the entertainment until after the event, and as a result, are filing
a grant application after the fact. Commissioner Filippi explained that
although the Commission strongly supports the event, the Commission does
not grant funds after an event. He asked if the Optimist Club could return
early next year to re-apply for funding for the 1996 Christmas Parade and Mr.
Garcia agreed to do so.
