ITEM 2-GRANT REQUEST FROM BEV HILLIARD, SEQUOIA ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION
Ms. Hilliard explained the dates for the concert currently in negotiation are
June 18 or 25 or first week in July. Originally she projected for dates during
the summer season when school is not in session. If the dates fall in June,
then rates may be lower. Sunday afternoon custodial rates are $44.30 per
hour. She estimated that the building would be used for six (6) hours per
concert. The expenses listed on the grant proposal can be cut in half.
Rehearsal times will hopefully fall within school times to reduce costs.
Chairperson Filippi asked if Ms. Hilliard could accept a lower grant amount
that the Commission might be able to consider. Ms. Hilliard explained that
she is trying to do everything she can to cut costs and is hoping to do it for
$4,000.00 instead of$4,763.00.
Commissioner Piulle asked if there was any way the school could waive the
custodial fees. Ms. Hilliard replied that unfortunately the janitors must be
paid, however, if a teacher is involved there may be a chance to reduce the
custodial fees. She explained that the Sequoia Alumni Association is totally
supportive of the event and Alumni members will be assisting.
Commissioner Distefano asked if this funding request was separate from the
Sequoia Alumni Association and Ms. Hilliard confirmed that it was.
ITEM 3 - NATIONAL PRESERVATION WEEK
Jean Cloud and Joanne Thompson of the Historic Resources Advisory
Committee announced they are looking for input from Civic Cultural
Commission regarding the upcoming National Preservation Week to be held
May 6-13. Mrs. Cloud noted they are in the planning stages and felt they
should have tie in with the Cultural Commission. They will be contacting
the Heritage Association, Archives Committee and the Historic Union
Cemetery Association for input regarding the week long celebration. Ms.
Thompson said they are planning on promoting more public awareness and
tours are being planned for 7th and 8th graders of Lathrop House, the Court
House and Fox Theater followed by a Burger King lunch. There are currently
six places in Redwood City on the National Historic Register.
Ideas suggested for the celebration were:
-Dedication for Carrington Hall for its placement on historical register; music
would be a nice touch.
-City Council Resolution
-Brochure
-Tour of Downtown Redwood City for general public
-Would like an art contest but not necessarily for this year, perhaps 1996
