Supervisor Hedges noted that more than 350 people attended the Archives <br /> Open House on February 26. The Secret Staircase is creating a quilt for Project <br /> Read and is giving out quilt squares to anyone who is interested in <br /> completing a square. Secret Staircase staff will sew all squares together and <br /> the completed quilt will be auctioned off on April 22 and all proceeds will <br /> benefit Project Read. Supervisor Hedges reported that the Library has applied <br /> for a grant to produce a video on the history of Redwood City's Hispanic <br /> heritage. She reminded all the Commissioners to write their Congressperson <br /> and Senator to continue their support of the arts by not reducing current <br /> funding levels. <br /> ITEM 2-JEFFERSON UNDERPASS PROJECT REVIEW <br /> Project Engineer Brian Lee of the Community Development Department <br /> explained this project has been in the planning stages for the past five years <br /> and this grade separation project is one of several on the Peninsula. Funds <br /> for the underpass project are coming from Measure A and Proposition 108 <br /> legislation. The architectural firm of DES Inc. was hired to work on the <br /> esthetics for the project and a model was developed of the proposed <br /> underpass and was shown to the Commissioners. Mr. Lee explained all <br /> proposed features of the model and showed detailed plans of the design <br /> which included the proposed landscaping for the project. <br /> Commissioner Filippi asked if the lighting fixtures for the project could <br /> include the same "acorn" lighting that was used on the downtown archway. <br /> Mr. Lee explained that the lighting will be similar to the lighting used on the <br /> downtown entry features. <br /> M/S Piulle/Moran: To endorse the proposed design of the Jefferson <br /> Underpass Project. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> Commissioner Filippi asked that his suggestion on the lighting fixtures be <br /> taken back to the Jefferson Underpass Task Force for their revie��. Mr. Lee <br /> stated that construction for the project is scheduled to begin in September or <br /> October and will take approximately 18 months to complete. <br /> ITEM 3 -GARFIELD SCHOOL PRINCIPAL-PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM <br /> Garfield School Principal Judy Daher explained that Garfield School is a <br /> performing arts magnet school for grades K-6 and is also a charter school. <br /> Garfield's enrollment is 535 children with 95% of the population being <br /> children of color and the majority being Hispanic. Ms. Daher explained the <br /> concept of being a charter school and how it operates differently than a <br /> regular elementary school. Garfield School has its own school board <br /> consisting of parents, teachers and community team members with funding <br />
