Currently, Garfield School has the lowest academic scoring levels in San Mateo County and their goal is to bring Garfield into the upper quarter of academic achievement for the County. Garfield School operates year round including during the summer. Ms. Daher explained a pre-school has been opened on site in addition to a health clinic. As a communications/performing arts/technology magnet school, Garfield offers each of its students 3 classes each week on dance, music and drama. They are able to take children from all different school districts and would like to draw more students from out of the area. They have a full time drama teacher, a dance master and would like to have a vocal or music teacher. Garfield School is working on enhancing its computer and video programs. Ms. Daher explained they do not have an auditorium and have no place to perform and the Commissioners gave her ideas for different venues for the students to perform. Ms. Daher also showed a video of a recent dance performance of 4th-6th graders and explained the progress the students have made since the beginning of the school year. Ms. Daher said she wanted to update the Commissioners on what Garfield School is doing and she will remain in contact. ITEM 4-REDWOOD CITY ART CENTER GRANT REQUEST Artist Vicki Whitten explained she is interested in putting on three hands-on art classes for children at the Redwood City Art Center which will be held on March 25, April 1 and April 8 from 1:00-4:OOpm each day. The classes will be offered at no charge to children from the ages of 5-17and the first two are scheduled for the Community Activities Building . Ms. Whitten brought in a draft copy of the advertising flyer for the classes and a survey which will be completed by parents/children participating in the event. She noted that the Art Center Board has given their support of the project and agreed to let her use the facility for the program. Commissioner Distefano confirmed that the Art Center is very short of funds and that they currently do not have enough funds to sponsor the entire event. Ms. Whitten explained that the grant of $380.00 is to pay only for supplies. The Commissioners delayed making a decision until later in the meeting when budget will be discussed.
