ITEM 3 -PENINSULA BALLET THEATER SCHOOL PRESENTATION
Rosine Bena of the Peninsula Ballet Theater School told about her 28 years
experience in the field of ballet and her desire to start a professional dance
company in two locations, one in Redwood City and one in Reno, Nevada.
She stated that she is planning a Reno Ballet this summer which will be
supported by the City of Reno in 1996. She believes that Redwood City would
be an ideal site for a ballet using the Fox Theater as a performance site. Ms.
Bena explained that she taught ballet to 800 students in Burlingame schools
through funding provided by the San Mateo County Arts Council.
Commissioner Filippi suggested having a "Ballet in the Schools" program in
Redwood City. He also suggested that Ms. Bena prepare information on
possible costs for different kinds of programs. Commissioner Piulle suggested
that Ms. Bena visit the Fox Theater and Canada College as possible venues
and Don Saye offered to introduce her to the Fox Theater staff. The
Commissioners expressed a strong interest in having a program for children.
Ms. Bena agreed to develop information on different scenarios and will
report back to the Commissioners at the May meeting.
ITEM 4 -ART CONTEST
Supervisor Hannon reported that the 12 finalists' entries are hanging in the
gallery of the Library until the end of May. Only 149 entries were received in
this year's contest which was probably because the theme was too difficult,
although the weather also may have deterred some school groups from
entering. Last year, over 1,900 entries were received. Commissioner Moran
noted that tvo other local service groups which sponsor art contests, have
also experienced a reduction in the number of entries received. The awards
ceremony for the Art Contest winners will be held at the Library on June 1.
ITEM 5-CONCERT PROGRAM
Supervisor Hannon reviewed the proposed 1995 Concert in the Parks Series
with the Commissioners. Commissioner Filippi suggested establishing 1 or 2
concert locations rather than moving the concerts around town. He also
wanted to hold 50% of the concerts on weekends. The cost of the 1995 series is
approximately $5,100.00 and the Port Commission has agreed to fund
$5,000.00. Commissioner Fischer felt that after work hours were not good
times periods for the concerts.
M/S Piulle/Moran: To accept the 1995 Concert Series program but leave
potential changes up to Supervisor Hannon to finalize.
Motion passed.
