Commissioner Ball asked if PCS has applied for any grants to help subsidize
their program and PCS Chairperson Beth Ann Fischer stated their board is
pursing this matter. The Commissioners suggested various businesses to
contact for funding. Commissioner Filippi asked how many Redwood City
residents attend PCS performances and Commissioner Fischer asked about
what percentage of the mailings go to Redwood City residents and Mr.
Bliznick said he would check with Kenneth Spicer for this information. Two
separate mailings are done - one for Redwood City shows and one for Palo
Alto shows.
Commissioners Ball and Piulle asked if PCS would acknowledge the Cultural
Commission's sponsorship in their brochure, advertisements, and programs
and Mr. Bliznick said they would.
M/S Piulle/Saye: To grant $30,000.00 to Peninsula Center Stage.
The Commissioners inquired about the specific musicals PCS would be
presenting and the PCS staff explained that licensing houses do not allow
them to announce this information until the rights are given to use the
materials. He felt the City may have more control over the publicly funded
murals than private murals, but that the City should have equally high
standards for both. Mr. Gilman said the AAC should have some input on the
approval of murals as they have considerable effect on architecture of
Redwood City. It was suggested that perhaps a joint study session could be
held with AAC and the Cultural Commission to develop a joint
recommendation on mural guidelines which would then go to the Planning
Commission and City Council. It was also suggested that a sub-committee
from each group could meet to discuss the matter. Supervisor Hannon will
check with Charles Jany to determine if AAC had formally adopted the draft
guidelines. Mr. Gilman said he would find out if the AAC's comments were
incorporated into the draft document in order to move forward with this
matter. Commissioners Piulle and Distefano will serve on the sub-
committee with Commissioner Fischer as an alternate. This matter will be
placed on the October agenda.
