Stafford Park. The Commissioners received a letter from resident Bob Barry
who suggested the Commission consider holding all its summer concerts at
one constant location and to hold them on a fixed day at a regular time. He
felt that Stafford Park was the best location and suggested the concerts be held
at that location for the next two years at 6:OOpm on Wednesdays, o they
would not conflict with concerts held in other cities.
Commissioner Distefano felt it would be a disservice to the whole
community by holding all concerts at the same location. Commissioner
Filippi stated that cities that hold their concerts in the same continuous
location are successful with their concert program. He liked Stafford Park and
Sequoia High School as possible sites. Commissioner Saye felt that Stafford
was a good location and that consistency at one site would increase
attendance. He also suggested having a site in Redwood Shores.
Commissioner Fischer suggested trying one site for a one year period of time.
Commissioner Filippi felt it would take 2-3 years at one specific site to
develop an audience. Commissioner Piulle felt the concert at Paragon Point
was very poorly attended and that it was a waste of money. She felt we
should exclude holding concerts in the private sector. She suggested holding
a total of 7 concerts - 4 to 5 at Stafford, 1 at Hoover and 1 at Marlin. She felt
we owe it to all Redwood City neighborhoods to provide concerts.
Commissioner Ball said she supported having one concert location and have
all concerts begin at the same time each date. She felt Stafford Park is a good
site because it is level, has a nice lawn area, and has places for children to play.
M/S Fischer/Distefano: For next year's concert season, select Stafford Park as
the site for the program for a one year period.
Commissioner Piulle said she felt Stafford was a good site but would like to
see one concert at Hoover and one at Marlin. Commissioner Distefano said
she spoke with Shirley Girnler regarding the event to be held on September
11 at Marlin Park. She was advised that the only entertainment is the band
the Cultural Commission sponsored, only six booths are occupied and are
limited to Redwood Shores businesses, and there is no entertainment
planned for the children.
Roll Call Vote: 6-yes, 1-no (Piulle)
Motion passed.
ITEM 7-MUSIC AT THE TRAIN STATION
Commissioner Filippi said he attended the Jazz Workshop at Stanford
University recently and discovered that some musicians play at the train
station during the morning and evening commute 2-3 times per month and
are paid for by CalTrain. The locations they play at are Sunnyvale, Millbrae,
and Burlingame. Commissioner Filippi will obtain more information.
