Civic Cul[ural Commission Page 3
Minu[es of July I1, 1996
M/S Ball/Redington: To grant $2,500.00 to Kollage Arts for a dance residency
program in collaboration with Peninsula Ballet Theater
School.
Yes-4, No-1. Motion passed.
-Peninsula Ballet Theater School
Rosine Bena explained that during her dance program at John Gill School,
she identified 40 needy students who she would like to provide dance
scholarships and bring them to her school for dance instruction. She plans to
use students and professional dancers to help instruct these children.
Chairperson Piulle felt that transportation is an issue and that it wo:ld be a
challenge for many of these students to get to San Mateo for the dance classes.
Nis. Bena stated she has not spoken to any of the students or their parents
regarding this program. She recognizes the transportation issue and only
requested scholarships for 25 students. The Commissioners mentioned that
since Summer was already half over, they were concerned about the timing of
the program. Chairperson Piulle suggested adding a third school to the ballet
program rather than funding this proposal.
M/S Redington/Britschgi: To decline the grant of $2,480.00 to Rosine Bena.
Motion passed.
M/S Redington/Saye: To grant $2,250.00 to Kollage Arts to fund a third
school for the dance residency program.
Motion passed.
Rosine Bena invited the Commissioners to attend an Open Rehearsal on
August 2 at 8:OOpm at the Peninsula Ballet Theater School.
ITEM 5-UPDATES
-Library Pmgrams
Library Supervisor LaRiviere explained people can now call from home for
various library services. She noted the 4th Internet terminal has been
installed in the Main Library. The Library activities for the month of
July/August are attached to the minutes.
-Summer Concert Series
Manager Julie Hannon provided a sign-up sheet for the Commissioners to
host the Summer Concerts. She agreed to include the type of music each
group plays on the revised Summer Concert flyer. Chairperson Piulle asked
each Commissioner to estimate the attendance at the concerts they host. She
thanked the Concert Sub-Committee (Commissioners Filippi, Ball and Saye)
for their work in lining up this year's music groups.
