She noted that high school bands are shrinking, community college <br /> classes are hurting and will continue to diminish as well attendance at all <br /> cultural events if we do not take action. <br /> Scott Morris read a letter from his father who was unable to attend the <br /> meeting regarding the positive influence of music programs on his life and <br /> urging the Commission to provide funding. <br /> Dr. Ron Crates, Superintendent of Schools, thanked the Commission for the <br /> support they have given to the arts in the schools. He invited the <br /> Commissioners to join this partnership and to use our limited resources <br /> together to reach a common goal. <br /> Councilman Ira Ruskin spoke as a member of the RESCUE Board regarding <br /> the partnership to endow chairs of music at each school. He saw it as an <br /> opportunity to proactively provide for cultural appreciation among our <br /> future adults. <br /> Lynn Hilferty provided a slide presentation regarding Kollage Community <br /> School of the Arts. The funds requested by Kollage would go to Redwood City <br /> schools via their non-profit arm "Friends of Kollage for the No Tin Ears <br /> Program" and support dance programs. <br /> Lua Hadar, Magnet Coordinator for John Gill School, spoke regarding her <br /> work with Kollage and their value to the community and connection to the <br /> art world. <br /> Gaylord Galiher, parent, spoke regarding his support for funding and shared a <br /> story of his daughter's joy at sharing a song with her parents. <br /> A parent involved in Art in Action at Roy Cloud School and drama classes at <br /> Canada College, spoke about how the program can be integrated into all <br /> school core curriculum. <br /> Commissioner Filippi spoke regarding his experience in school music <br /> programs and the connection to Council priorities of youth and education. <br /> M/S Filippi/Distefano: To provide funding of $24,600.00 to both Kollage <br /> and RESCUE. <br /> Motion withdrawn. <br /> M/S Filippi/Saye: To grant $10,000.00 to the Redwood City Educational <br /> Foundation contingent on Council budget approval. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br />
