Civic Cuiturai Commission July 10, 1997
Minutes 4
The Chairperson called for a brief recess at 8:15 p.m. and called the meeting
back to order at 8:30 p.m.
Commissioner Piulle discussed grant application process.
M/S Piulle/Redington: To modify the computer use only grant
application so that it is clear that it provides heading only and is
not to be submitted to the Commission.
Motion passed unanimously.
Item 3 Subcommittee Reports
Publicity - Distefano
Commissioner Distefano noted that she continued to advertise for the summer
concerts in the Almanac.
Tis the Season Event - Ball
Chairperson Ball reported on the upcoming meeting of the Tis the Season
committee on 8/27/97 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Activities Building. After
much discussion, it was decided that no more than three Commissioners should
attend the meetings. Those designated to represent the Commission are
Chairperson Ball, Vice Chairperson Filippi and Commissioner Saye.
Public Art - Piulle
Commissioner Piulle reported on her conversation with the artist who created
the Arguello bust, Ray Lorezato. He estimated it would cost $500 to make
repairs. Commissioner Piulle thought that it would be appropriate to consider
the funding request once a location had been determined for the statue.
Ms. Piulle also spoke of her attendance at the City Hall Facilities Committee
where she reiterated the Commission's position that the building should be
completed prior to making decisions on the art. She noted that several Ralph
Ledesma paintings are currently hanging in the temporary City Hall.
Summer Concerts
Vice Chairperson Filippi reported on the excellent attendance at the most recent
summer concert. The concept of having all concerts at one park site and the
use of banners and enlarged flyers in store windows seems to have increased
the crowds. The Commissioners thanked Manager Julie Hannon for all of her
hard work in setting up for the concerts.
Youth and Special Events
Commissioner Britschgi reported that the Redwood City Art Center would be
doing art activities for children at Make a Circus on Tuesday, August 5th at Red
Morton Park.
