Civic Cultura!Commission Page 3
Minutes of January 7, 1999
ITEM 4 — REVIEW OF CCC GRANT PROCESS
Superintendent Centeno asked the Commission to review the FY97-98 grant
funding process and to provide her with any changes or revisions. She asked
the Commission if they would consider more than one grant application from
the same applicant during one fiscal year. She explained that the reason for
accepting all large grants at the same time was to give the Commission a
chance to compare all large requests at the same time and also to prevent
the Commission from running out of money before the end of the fiscal year.
The Commissioners discussed increasing the total annual budget requirement
for applicants; allowing schools to apply for grants once a quarter;
determining if there is a seasonal flow of grants during the year.
M/S Schenone/Dale: To allow applicants to apply and receive up to two
small grants per year.
Motion passed. (Yes-6; No-1, Britschgi)
The Commissioners asked for a self-evaluation form to be given to all grant
applicants after their events/performances which would be returned to the
Commission. Commissioner Pierce felt that more impact is made with large
grants and would like to see the large grant allocation increased. The
Commissioners will be provided the grant mailing list in their February
packet; please provide names and addresses of new organizations to
Secretary Monroe. Commissioner Dale would like to determine how
performances in the downtown area impact businesses economically and
culturally.
ITEM 5 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS
-Cultural Commission Sponsored Events - Tis the Season
The.Commissioners discussed the Tis the Season events and had the
following comments: parade was well attended but fireworks were
dissipated by the rain; attendance was better than last year; it was hard to
see performance; it was better managed this year; there were large gaps in
parade; long time to wait for fireworks after parade; look at timing; perhaps
start earlier; could not see stage; people walking with their children in parade
made it hard to see; suggested skipping performances altogether; use
bleachers for groups so they can be seen by audience; just have kids
perform, not the adults; do everything and culminate with the tree lighting
ceremony like other cities; Mini-Nutcracker was 2/3 full and was a well done
performance; suggest sending a letter to Virginia Ball and Bob Slusser about
event; questions about advertising costs and the appearance of the posters;
a Commission representative is needed on the Tis the Season Committee. A
follow-up evaluation form is needed from all grantees; form to include
stimated Redwood City residence involved in their performance; number of
tickets sold and number of performances.
-Summer Concerts
Nothing to report.
-Public Art
Commissioner Britschgi will be meeting with Community Development
Director Deborah Nelson regarding public art and asked for the
