The letter was given to
Bud Sprunger, reporter for the Redwood City Tribune.
A LETTER FROM E. W. BUTLER, MANAGER OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WAS READ BY CLERK PRO -TEM
RICHARD MILLER, INVITING MEMBERS OF THE REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL to be their guests on
Thursday, June 24th, 12 o'clock noon at The Three Owls Restaurant for an "Industrial
Exploration Luncheon and Tour". The touring party will inspect the Port of Redwood
City, some of the industries and available industrial lands, ending in a meeting
at the S & W Find Foods for light refreshments about 3:00 P. M. Others invited
were a representative of the San Francisco Bay Area Council, San Francisco Chamber
of Commerce Industrial Department, and United States Chamber of Commerce, State
Chamber of Commerce, various bankers, heads of utility companies, etc., so that
they might have a clear picture of the possibilities of Redwood City as the indus-
trial center of the San Francisco peninsula.
COUNCILMEN Britschgi and Spillers entered the meeting - 8:05 P. M.
Mayor Werder, Councilmen Swift, Holmquist, Britschgi and Spillers accepted Mr.
Butler's invitation. A lengthy discussion revealed that permits previously
two
granted were not quite specific enough and the utility company had not had to do
too much in the past on replacement. City Engineer Jain stated he had spent some
time marking out the least that would be accepted as replacement and insisted that
it be out with concrete saw. Mayor Werder inquired if they had used concrete saw
and the City Engineer replied they had. Mayor Werder thought that, if taken up
with the P. G. & E. Engineer, they would cooperate in replacing the sidewalk.
Councilman Granger felt that a large percentage of damaged sidewalk caused by those
companies should be replaced by them and that they should be notified if work was
not satisfactory. City Engineer stated he could not go much further as the permit
which was granted last fall showed what they intended to do within a few feet;
