PAUL WHALEY, CHAIRMAN OF AMERICAN RED CROSS SEQUOIA CHAPER DISASTER COMMITTEE SUB_ <br />witted list of committees to City Clerk and stated copies had been sent to City <br />Manager Rolison, Chief Collins and Chief Lodi, and that in case of disaster the <br />Disaster Committee would be contacted by the Police and/or Fire Department. <br />Communication was ordered filed. <br />PETITION FOR 9th AVENUE IN FRIENDLY ACRES WAS PRESENTED TO THE COUNCIL BY Mrs. R. LEHMER. <br />AMR <br />r..90 <br />Under discussion Mrs. Tomaile appeared in behalf of the Madrigales, and stated that <br />they would protest if this street was to run through their property. City Engineer <br />Jain stated the street was needed but was out off on both ends. Further discussion man% <br />revealed that petitioners should have presented petition to the Planning Commission + <br />but due to misunderstanding he thought they were to present it to the Council. Mrs. <br />Lehmer, 1076 - 8th Avenue, is to notify the petitioners to appear at the meeting of <br />the Planning Commission next Monday, May 24th at 8:00 P.M. Councilman Holmquist <br />moved that the matter be referred to the Planning Commission, seconded by Councilman <br />Britschgi, and carried. <br />UNITED NATIONS APPEAL FOR CHILDREN. A letter from C. E. Marcus, District Director of <br />American Overseas Aid, was read by City Clerk Dodge requesting permission to solicit <br />funds to provide necessities for destitute children in war -ravaged countries overseas, <br />and resolution enclosed. There was considerable discussion as to procedure for <br />solicitation. Worthiness of cause was agreed upon. Mayor Werder stated he had <br />received communications in regard to this need. Gerald E. Towne,. President of the <br />Chamber of Commerce, addressed the Council in behalf of Mrs. Rose Bradley, who was � <br />r <br />present and would take charge of soliciting. During discussion it was brought out <br />that local Community Chest was $5,000 short of their quota and the Red Cross had not <br />made their quota; that the local teen age needed help. Time limit for soliciting <br />would be from May 15th to June 15th. It was decided that Mayor Werder would act as <br />honorary chairman and appoint a business chairman. Councilman Spillers offered <br />resolution that organization be given permission to solicit funds for the above cause, <br />and moved adoption, seconded by Councilman Holmquist, and carried. On roll call vote, <br />Councilman Granger passed vote, having previously stated that he did not know enough <br />about it to give an answer tonight, as he felt there were two sides to the issue. <br />RESOLUTION No. 576 <br />RESOLUTION IN CONNECTION WITH UNITED NATIONS APPEAL FOR CHILDREN. <br />WHEREAS, the United Nations upon authority of the Grand Assembly has sponsored <br />the United Nations Appeal for Children among the United Nations, for the purpose of <br />financing the approved project of the International Children's Emergnecy Fund and the <br />approved projects of twenty-five long established and recognized overseas agencies; and <br />WHEREAS, these projects are to provide emergency food, clothing, shelter and <br />medicine to the more than 230 million destitute children in overseas war -ravaged coun- <br />tries whose survival depends upon the success of this international effort; and <br />WHEREAS, the President of the United States and the State Department for our <br />government has called upon the citiznes of the United States to raise through volun- <br />teer, non-governmental sources 60 million dollars as its proportionate share in the <br />world-wide campaign; and <br />WHEREAS, the Governor of our. own State of California has called upon the municipal <br />officials of California to take the initiative in bringing this appeal to the citizens <br />of our city; <br />I <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council authorize the Mayor of <br />Redwood City or a member of the Council to act as chairman of the United Nations <br />Appeal for Children in Redwood City; and <br />
