Union Cemetery— Lathrop Fence restoration
Mr. Zack introduced the project: The Historic Union Cemetery Association is proposing
to restore the fence at the Lathrop gravesite.
Ms. Crawford, Historic Union Cemetery Association President, stated that the
Association would like to restore the Lathrop gravesite fence. There are very few
pieces left of the cast iron fence (post with an urn and flame on top), and would like to
restore it as exact as possible. Recommendation from the HRAC is needed for HUCA
to move forward, since the project will cost a lot of money. There are not enough
original pieces of the fence, but they propose to incorporate as much of the original
pieces as possible. There are some issues adding the finial at the top. It may take
around $20k to complete the project and HUCA still needs to research a vendor and
options for replicating the fence, the project may take up to two years to complete. The
granite blocks will continue to be used under the fence. There are six posts that are re-
usable and the Association has found something that is close to replication, but they
may get by with just using the six posts and any materials, if feasible, will be reused.
Discussion took place regarding the materials, pattern and the costs of the fence.
Committee Members Rhoads stated that sand casting can be an option.
Chair Rolandelli stated that a plaque indicating what was originally there is needed.
John Edmunds stated that the originals can be sandblasted to almost new and can
make the posts look reasonably close to the fence, but the cost will be expensive.
Committee Member Rhoads suggested finding a way to use the existing parts with
other material, it will be different, but less costly.
Mr. Edmunds recommended in six months HUCA come back to the HRAC with the
steps that were taken and the money that was raised for the project.
LEGAL22641265.1
