Aesthetics <br /> Council Member Ruskin said it was important for the City to change the way it <br /> addressed every aspect of every project, asking how does it affect the City aesthetically? <br /> He also said that maintenance costs at the appropriate levels should be factored into <br /> every project. <br /> Council Member Claire said guidelines were needed to prevent buildings that were <br /> unacceptable such as a recent one on Woodside Road, but not slow the process. <br /> Council Members and staff discussed who would set standards and who would <br /> determine when they were violated. <br /> Council Member Ruskin said a new attitude was needed, a commitment on all levels <br /> by all employees to question the aesthetics before taking action on any project no matter <br /> how small. <br /> Council Member Ira described how staff hid an eyesore on Woodside Road after he <br /> brought it to the City's attention, and suggested that he shouldn't have to direct staff, it <br /> should be an integral part of staffs commitment to aesthetics in Redwood City <br /> Council Member Leipzig said he had directed staff to act in similar situations, and <br /> agreed that aesthetics/clean up should be understood by every member of City staff to be <br /> an established and enforceable policy. <br /> Priority No.4. Parks and Fields <br /> Council Member Hartnett said the City needed partnerships to find more space for <br /> more fields, and focus on working with the Community College District. He asked that <br /> the City emphasize improving parks quickly and simply rather than waiting until the <br /> whole $500,000 is in the budget. <br /> Council Member Claire recommended working with Sequoia High School and all the <br /> elementary schools, and added that he did not favor charging field use fees. <br /> Mayor Howard agreed with her colleagues and said more emphasis must also be placed <br /> on maintaining existing fields and parks. <br /> Priority No.5.
