<br />receive such an honor for doing something that brought her so much joy. She described the <br />value and pleasure of reading, and the need for books, whether read through electronic <br />means or held in one's hands, to be available to everyone. <br />Council Member Claire recalled how he and Mrs. Trice met at St. Matthias Church over <br />thirty years ago, and thanked her for her wonderful volunteer efforts in the community for <br />more than the twenty-seven years she dedicated to the Redwood City Library. <br />Mayor Howard read and presented the City Proclamation to Genevieve McKibbin, who <br />also has given twenty-seven years of outstanding volunteer service to Homebound readers <br />through the Redwood City Library. Mayor Howard described Genevieve's volunteer work, <br />every Tuesday since 1992, reading and working in the Library's Children's Room. <br />Council Member Hartnett recalled his school days with Mrs. McKibbin's son, Mike, who <br />was in the audience, and a birthday party at their house where Genevieve was so kind and <br />so accommodating. Council Member Hartnett said, "she has been doing good things for <br />longer than twenty-seven years." <br />Genevieve McKibbin thanked the Council for this honor and said, "Time flies when you <br />are a volunteer." <br />All the family members of Mrs. Trice and Mrs. McKibbin stood up in the audience and <br />received a warm and grateful round of applause. <br /> MEMO 3/17/98 <br />_nn___-_------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br />B. Presentation of Certificates from the Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program to <br />Friendly Acres and Centennial Neighborhood Associations; (212) <br />Assistant to the City Manager Moore described the Neighborhood Improvement Grant <br />Program which provides funding for small capital improvement projects "for a better <br />tomorrow." <br />Mayor Howard presented the certificate of achievement to Jan LaMantia, representing the <br />Centennial Neighborhood Association. Mayor Howard said the grant program recognizes <br />that "small differences over time can make a big difference." Mrs. LaMantia thanked the <br />Council for this program and said the Neighborhood was really excited about the project. <br />She described the Association's idea to encourage more people to attend its meetings by <br />having a large message board announcing meetings, and also to alert everyone driving by to <br />upcoming projects or events, such as the 4th of July Parade. Mrs. LaMantia said the board <br />would be ready in four weeks. <br />Mayor Howard presented the next certificate of achievement to Ed Bailey and Diana <br />Johnson representing the Friendly Acres/East Bayshore Neighborhood Association. <br />Assistant Moore described the Association's idea to establish an emergency preparedness <br />container filled with items to assist the neighbors after a disaster such as an earthquake.
