. . . . . -

roles. He said that currently the children's play areas were separated into two areas on two
sides of the park, which created a safety concern. Mr. Gilbert said there was an issue with
- the drinking fountain on the edge of the park, and with the maintenance of existing open
space. He said there were issues with age appropriate play equipment and concomitant
safety issues. Mr. Gilbert said that the new design provided a good landscaping buffer
between the park and the neighbors. Mr. Gilbert described the improved picnic area and
circular stage area that would accommodate the summer concerts in the park.
Susan McKay said that the proposed elements involved in the proposal for Stafford Park
tried to address the concerns of park users and neighbors. She pointed out that the new
circular play equipment area was surrounded by a see-through security fence and gate,
with age appropriate equipment, toddlers equipment on one side and older children's
equipment on the other, separated by a tree shaded arbor, and was situated further away
from the street. She described the water and sand play area which had been highly
recommended by the park users. Ms. McKay said the geometry of the design was to
provide all the desired play equipment and safety measures and create a "stroll through"
park accessible by all ages and mobility. She described the music presentation area which
faced the open space area of the park. Ms. McKay described the design of the water play
area which included "water jars" and was modeled after the Pulgas Water Temple.
Tim Gilbert said MIG held similar community meetings for Stulsaft Park. He said that
the neighborhood was changing with younger families moving in with young children. He
said the proposed design would make Stulfsaft more accessible, both physically and
- visually. Mr. Gilbert showed poster boards of the new design and said the community had
stressed that more shade in the park was needed with more seating in the shade as well.
He said the community wanted a "safe, shaded, natural, creative play area" that fitted into
the Stulsaft Park aesthetic, with emphasis on security and accessibility. Mr. Gilbert said
the new designs for Stulsaft Park took into consideration that Stulsaft was considered a
regional park, with hiking trails and panoramic views.
Susan McKay described in detail the proposed elements for Stulsaft Park which focused
on safety, with moving people and activity away from Farm Hill Boulevard and the creek.
She described the removal of some vegetation and the creation of a maze of small cypress
trees. Ms. McKay pointed out the areas where additional shade trees were planned, the
long curved landform walkway which connects the lower and upper parts of the park, and
the "hill slide." She described the new playground equipment which was separated into
two areas, toddlers and older children, the shaded seating area, the water and sand activity
facilities, and the geological area.
Mr. Gilbert said the emphasis of the design was to provide safe and accessible new play
areas that reflected the desires of the community. He said there was still work to be done
and issues to be resolved before the designs could be fmalized, but the conceptual plans
did meet the challenges presented by the community.
