Will there be theater discounts for public transit users?
23. Regarding parking, she stated that the staff in San Diego said that
moviegoers used business lots, private pay for use lots, and on-street metered
spaces. She said there were no requirements for additional parking.
Economic Consultant Kelly said that the theaters would attract a lot of young
people, and would also encourage people to come to the downtown, with
younger people being interested in one show, and adults being interested in
another. He also explained that it was very difficult to find sites for theaters,
- and because they cost $10 to $12 million to build, they would have to be
updated if the technology changes. He also stated that a larger site would be
more interesting to a developer than a smaller site. Regarding discounts on
tickets or price controls, Consultant Kelly did not think the City could control
these issues.
In response to questions about possibly including a hotel in the development
plans, City Manager Everett stated hotel developers who are talking to the
City like to be closer to the freeway.
Economic Development Coordinator Webb reviewed the criteria for the
request for proposal as follows:
I. A mixed use, with retail development, restaurants, office and residential
would be acceptable.
2. Linkages to the downtown and Sequoia Station and not seeing the backsides
of the buildings would be important.
3. Visual corridors on Jefferson after the completion of the underpass and on
Broadway should be maintained.
4. The theater should be located in the center, and the rest of the street
frontages would be wrapped with retail and no back doors.
-
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 MAY26,1998
JOINT STUDY SESSION MINUTES Page No. 511 PAGE 6
CONCURRENT COUNCILIREDEVELOPMENT AGENCY MEETING
