Mayor Pro Tem Howard reported that over the weekend, she and her husband attended <br /> the Optimist Club's annual all-you-can-eat shrimp and crab feast at the Community <br /> Activities Building. She said it was an extremely popular event and it was sold out again <br /> this year. Mayor Pro Tem Howard said the Optimist Club performed great community <br /> services in Redwood City and commended them on their successful fund raiser. She said <br /> they were assisted by members of the Soroptimists. <br /> MEMO 3/10/97 <br /> Mayor Pro Tem Howard also commended the Soroptimists whose fundraising activities <br /> provide college scholarships, which were awarded this past week. She said she was one of <br /> the judges this year and was very impressed with the quality of the applications ITom <br /> Redwood City. <br /> MEMO 3/10/97 <br /> C. Councilman Leipzig , "On the Sister City relationship, I just want to make a comment. <br /> I'm all for fostering economic trade, but I do hope that we can send back to the new Sister <br /> City, in addition to the existing one that we have as a City, the issue of human rights. I <br /> think that we need to stress the importance and commitment that we have here in the <br /> United States to human rights, and encourage the government of China to do all it can to <br /> improve a very poor record in that regard." <br /> MEMO 3/10/97 <br /> D. Councilman Ruskin said, "I would like first to second Councilman Leipzig's statement, <br /> especially in regard to the apparent genocidal activities of the Chinese government in <br /> certain of the areas that it occupies. This is a very serious matter to me, and something <br /> that is easy to overlook because of the good that can come ITom economic relationships. <br /> But there have been too many, we have gone through too many wars in the past, over such <br /> matters as these, not to pay some attention to that as wel1." <br /> MEMO 3/10/97 <br /> Councilman Ruskin described the groundbreaking earlier in the day for the new <br /> Electronic Arts building, "which was a very nice ceremony, and it was great to welcome <br /> Electronic Arts to Redwood City. We expect they will be up and running in about a year, <br /> maybe a little more, and really glad to see the turn-out there. Councilman Claire said, "I want to make sure everybody understands that we do not have <br /> a Sister City relationship, it is a Port relationship, and we have no jurisdiction basically <br /> over the Port.
