B. Councilwoman La Berge said that even though the new City Hall would not yet be
occupied at the time of the annual 4th of July Parade, she suggested the City sponsor some
sort of activity in ITont of the new City Hall, such as the awards for the floats or a musical
concert or event. She said the City shouldn't miss the opportunity to show off this beautiful
new building.
MEMO 4/22/97
C. Vice Mayor Howard reported on the very successful Annual Spring Clean-up in Redwood
City on Saturday, April 19. She said over 600 volunteers participated and it was a
wonderful event. She distributed pictures of the clean-up activities. Vice Mayor Howard
said major work was done, and thanked the following people and merchants for their time,
money and resources: Auto Zone, Vanessa's Meat Market, BFI, Carl's Jr., Burger King,
Sequoia Station Safeway, Noah's Bagels, Starbuck's, McDonalds, Coors, Pete's Harbor,
Terry's Groom Room, Ginny and Pete Hughes, the Court House Coffee Shop, Fuller
O'Brien Paints in San Carlos, Judy Buchan's mother, Dorothy, donated cookies, Main
Street Coffee and a wild bird group who donated water down to the sluices for the people
who were working down there, Rene White who videoed the activities, Regina Johnson and
Merilee Sayers did the photography.
Vice Mayor Howard thanked City staff for organizing the clean-up, having all the
equipment and services ready, and being there to handle all the assignments. She thanked
Pat Valentine and Carolyn McLaurin, the Parks and Recreation and Community Services
Department and Director Griffiths, Superintendents Gibbons and Mann, and the Public
Works Services Department.
Vice Mayor Howard asked City Manager Everett to report on his project. He described
how six volunteers went to paint over graffiti and within hours there were over 30 members
of the neighborhood there to help them. With the neighbors help they were able to paint
over three apartment buildings. City Manager Everett said it was a great learning
experience, and demonstrated that neighbors can be powerful influences in their own
communities by not only attending Neighborhood Association meetings to discuss common
problems and solutions, but sponsoring and getting involved in these kinds of clean-up
events.
Vice Mayor Howard said these scheduled City clean-ups were extensions of how people
feel about their own homes, it was doing Spring cleaning on a city-wide basis. She thanked
the Council for its support as this annual Spring Clean-Up has grown over the years. She
thanked the people of the City for joining in the clean-up and showing their pride for
Redwood City.
MEMO 4/22/97
Mayor Hartnett thanked Vice Mayor Howard for her leadership that made the Council so
proud. He thanked all the people in the community who turned out to do something so
wonderful for the whole community.
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 APRIL 21, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 264 PAGE 12
