Council action on the sale of Bair Island to POST with eventual transfer to the U.S.
Wildlife Service as part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge
(Continued ITom April 14, 1997) (205);
Mayor Hartnett advised this matter was previously discussed at the April 7, 1997
Council Meeting.
Councilman Ruskin referred to the proposed resolution and praised the safeguarding of
Bair Island, while "stating the interest that Redwood City has in looking further into
certain amenities for the City and certain access for the City, specifically a connector road
between the Redwood Shores neighborhood and the rest of Redwood City, as well access
for recreation. Our interest was in stating this early and upITont both to support POST and
to also indicate our interest in pursuing this matter through the Task Force that was
discussed at the previous Monday evening."
Councilwoman La Berge said she hoped this would signal the Council's interest in
working cooperatively for the benefit of all citizens of Redwood City and its sphere of
influence, especially continued access to this beautiful reserve.
---- Mayor Hartnett called upon those people who submitted speaker's cards.
Walter Moore, Director of Land Acquisitions, POST, in charge of the Bair Island Project,
thanked the Council for its support of the acquisition and expressed support for the
resolution. He said its passage would be very important to the very difficult appropriations
process to garner $10 million ITom the Federal Land and Water Conservation Funds. He
requested a copy of the resolution if it passed.
MEMO 4/22/97
Manuel Sotomayor, 12 Riviera Circle, distributed a hand-out, and asked the Council to
appoint members of the Redwood Shores Neighborhood to the Task Force. Mr.
Sotomayor advised that as a member of the Homeowners Association, he had voted
against the letter supporting the acquisition by POST because it opposed a connector road.
He said the road was needed to protect the residents of Redwood Shores in case of a
cataclysmic or major seismic event. Mr. Sotomayor also asked that the Council hold a full
discussion of this matter to better inform the Redwood Shores community residents. He
said a survey would not be meaningful.
Ralph Nobles, 3720 Country Club Drive, said the Friends of Redwood City weTe not in
favor of the conditions put upon the resolution, but would support it. He suggested
changes in wording to the Resolution and submitted a handout detailing the recommended
'--- revisions. Dr. Nobles addressed three of the Council's concerns. He pointed out that the
Wildlife Refuge news release stated its policy that it encourages public access.
