II I I I I II

Councilman Leipzig expressed support to conduct Council meetings on a day other than
Monday. Referring to a possible conflict with meetings of Council appointed boards,
---- committees and commissions, Councilman Leipzig said if the Council decided to change
days, the Council appointed boards, committees and commissions could change their
meeting days if they wished. He added that a Tuesday meeting in the new City Hall
Chamber would be a new start and might increase attendance. He said the conflict with
Monday night football possibly keeps some attendees away from Council meetings. He
also suggested changing the time to 7:00 p.m.
Councilwoman La Berge said she had lived in Redwood City for 35 years, and Council
meetings had always been on Monday nights. She said it's a tradition, and it would be
difficult for her to make that change, and probably for many others in the community as
well. Councilwoman La Berge said changing days might cause a conflict with other
meetings, and traditions are very important to a community. She said she did not see a
terribly important reason to make such a change.
Councilwoman Buchan said that although she wasn't sure it was always the best way to
start the week, she had settled on Mondays, but she was open to an earlier starting time.
Councilman Claire said the Redwood City Council is the only one in the County that
meets four times a month. He said that before Council Members consider changing the
day of the week, he suggested they look at the number of meetings they have each
month. He said it was previously suggested that they have two business meetings and
- one or two study sessions each month. Councilman Claire said he was a 4ger season
ticket holder, but in the past the Council had canceled the meetings when the 4gers were
playing and made up those meetings on the fifth Monday of the month. He said he works
seven days a week and Monday Council meetings were more convenient for him, as he
used the weekends to research Council agenda items.
MIS: LEIPZIG/- TO HOLD TWO MEETINGS PER MONTH BEGINNING AT 7:00
P.M.
The motion died due to the lack of a second.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 97-173
Mayor Hartnett called on those people in the audience who wished to speak to this
issue.
Nita Spangler, 970 Edgewood Road, said the County Supervisors are cutting back their
meetings and "as a result their meetings are jannned up when they do meet, and the
public feels offended because they are left out, and things are not always dealt with as
timely as they might be." Mrs. Spangler said she supported the four monthly meetings,
but suggested that the meetings be shorter. She said that meetings with few attendees
trivializes the work of government.
"--
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO- 55 AUGUST 25,1997
MINUTES Page No. 511 PAGE 13
