Pete Hughes, 18 Admiralty Court, spoke in favor of changing meeting nights. He said
he and his wife, Ginny, attend most Council meetings because they believe there should
be people who live in the community who are well versed in what the Council is doing.
Mr. Hughes said that during the football season they seldom attend the Council meetings.
He said a change in days might encourage more quality people to run for Council. He
added that since he and Ginny are two of only a few people in the audience, if the
Council doesn't change, the Council will lose half of its audience for most of the rest of
the year.
Alan Brandt, 2627 Delaware, reminded Council that the Redwood City School District
meets on Wednesday nights.
Councilman Claire agreed that many agencies meet during the week and the Council
didn't want to cause conflicts with other meetings. He said he was a big football fan, but
didn't believe that it impacted Council attendance that greatly, except perhaps when the
4gers were playing, and those canceled meetings could be made up. Councilman Claire
said he supported having more study sessions, perhaps every other Monday night, to
research complex issues. He also asked that when it appears an upcoming agenda is
very, very light, the City Manager and City Clerk cancel those meetings.
Mayor Hartnett advised that the current schedule allows for two business meetings and
two study sessions per month depending upon the need and the subject matter. He said
that the summer schedule and the move into the new City Hall had altered that schedule.
Mayor Hartnett asked that the Council fall schedule be placed on the upcoming agenda
for Council discussion.
MEMO 8/26/97
Councilwoman La Berge asked that the Council schedule more meetings with their
appointed boards, committees and commissions.
MEMO 8/26/97
B. Councilwoman La Berge announced that on the weekend of September 4-7, Redwood
City's sister city Zhuhai, China and a possible future sister city, Colima, Mexico, were
sending delegations to Redwood City to help us celebrate the opening of the new City
Hall on September 6. She advised that on September 4 there will be a reception at the
Art Center from 5 to 8 p.m. which is open to the public, and on September 5 there will be
a fundraiser at Canada College to send a cultural delegation to Zhuhai next year. The
Canada event is called "An American Tapestry in Motion" and will feature outstanding
local and international performers. Councilwoman La Berge invited everyone to attend
these two special events.
MEMO 8/26/97
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 AUGUST 25, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 512 PAGE 14
