.Jti
rad by the Clerk pro-tem:
The City Council recently requested a study of the practicability
of widening Hopkins Avenue west of Nevada Street where the street con-
verges from an 80-foot right of way and 56-foot pavement to a 50-foot
riht of way and 30-foot pavement.
we have considered the widening of the present pavement from 30
feet to 1}0 feet in order to satisfy the minimum raquirements for use
of gas tax funds, and which would permit a standard two lane pavement ,,,,,,
parking on both sides. Even this minimum widening would create con-
siderable damage to property frontages and landscaping, and necessitate
the removal and re-construction of most of he eaisting sidewalk, much
of which has only recently been installed.
Some of the residente in the area have already indicated their
opposition to such a proect, both from the standpoint of damage to
their property, and to the increased traffic which would resul.t. It
is - also apparent that the trafPic condition would not appreciably im-
prove if Hopkins Avenue is widened, as it would still result in the
sudden funneling of traffic into a narror roadway located on both a ,,,
curve and a hill.
A preliminary estimate of costs of widening Hopkins Avenue from
Nevada to Westgate indieates a sum of 25,000.00 or more, depending
upon how many retaining walls, etc. , would have to be constructed or
re-constructed, and how much severance damage would occur.
In view of the many problems to be encountered, we sugest that
this matter be thoroughly studied by the Traffic Study Comtnittee, so
- - that all factors can be considered before a definite reconnnendation
is made to the City Council.
Councilman Bri-schgi moved acceptance of the report and same to be turned over to the Traffic
Fact Finding Committee a.nd report back in three weeks, aeconded by Councilman Spillers and
c arr ie d.
REPORT: COUNCILMAId GRANGER REGARDING LIGHTING EL CAMINO REAL. An average of
approximately 500 persons attend each of these danees. A bar, serving
only beer, is ma,intained and operated by the Foresters of America, inside
the building.
2. The Management employs three special policemen to maintain order
in the building and to reu1 ate parking and maintain order in he private
parking lot ad3acent to the hall. A management committee of five men
supervise the dance floor.
3. People living in the residential area adjacent to the hall are
undoubtedly affected by the noise incidental to the parking of automo-
biles, the music during the dance, and the breaking-up of a large group ,,,,
of people at a late hour.
4. During the six months from last a2arch thraugh August this depart- ''
ment has besn summoned to the dance hall on seven occasions for the fol-
lowing reasons:
2 disturbances
2 malicious mischief against parke d autos
1 theft from a parked auto °-.
1 ambulance follow-ip on a cardiac case
1 miscellaneous information -
..
- 5.
