4
COUNCILMAN GRANGER READ A LE"I'ER ADDRESSED TO PASCO BALZARINI, PARK SUPERINTENDENT, PURSUANT TO
THE REQUEST OF COUNCILIV[AN GRANGER IN GRANTING PERMISSION TO REDWOOD ITY FOR THE PLANTING
OF THE UNDEVELOPED TRIANGULAR P4RTION OF SAFEWAY STORES, INCORPORATED, property on Woodside
Road near E1 Camino Real. It is the understanding of the Safeway Stores that the planting
is to consist of redwood trees, and they would only require that the trees be properly trim-
med so that visibility of their parking lots signs and store would not be impaired. Their
permission is granted on the conditioi that Redwood City hold Safeway Stores, Incorporated ""'
harmless from any liability incurred by reason of said plantin, and further, that all
necessary maintenance be performed by City. Safeway Stcres, Incorporated further reserves
the right, if atfany time in the future possession of th is parcel is needed for parking
purposes or otherwise, to remove all planting at their cost and expense. Councilman Gran-
ger moved acceptance of Safeway Stores letter and that the City acknowledge their letter,
seconded by Couneilman Stout and carried.
COUNCILMAN ROYER REMARKED IAT THE SIGNS WERE WORKING BEAUTIFULLY ON WHIPPLE AND EL CAMINO REAL.
COUNCILMAN STOUT REPORTED THAT HE HAD RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE DIVISION OF H IGHWAYS in accord-
ance with a request received from Mr. Dolwig for a copy of the general route map adopted by
the California Highway Commission on January 21, 1953 hich depicts the route for a portion
of State Highway oute 68 in San Mateo County and the City of Redwood City between 0.1
mile north of Redwood City and Charter Street. Niayor Herkner asked that the letter be
turned over to the City Engineer. City Manager Rolison requested that City Eninee Jain
report on the meeting he attended with. the San Mateo County Plannin Commission on August
26th. Adr. Jain expl aine d tha t the mee ting w as in re gard to t he propo s ed re al i g.ment and
,
construction of Willow Road to connect the Sandhill Road-Alpine Road area. It developed

that consideration was being given to reqtzesting the State Highway Deparment to abandon
Woodside Road and Main Street as a State Highway, and to move it to this proposed exten-
sion of Vkiillor Roa,d, which evould connect this with. Dumbarton Road. lir. Jain stated that
he took the liberty of advising the San Mateo County Planning Commission that Redwood City,
particularly because of the developments which have built up along this route because of
its being a State Highway, and also the rnaintenance and construction cost which would be
automatically assumed by the City if the Stats should abe.ndon it. N1r. Jain thought that
tha Council should be advised of the proposal so that the matter could be considered before
the proect becomes too far advanced. The County Engineer was requested to prepare esti-
mates of the cost of making surveys and studies in the area, which could result in more
definite planning within the near future.
