Councilwoman La Berge said she was intrigued by Mr. Hitchcock's comments regarding homes that could accommodate more than one family. She expressed support for encouraging and perhaps providing some sort of incentive to people who would share their homes, and suggested staff might explore such a policy. Councilwoman La Berge described her participation in sharing her home with students. She said it is a wonderful way to learn about another country. MEMO 10/28/97 Councilman Ruskin asked if the subcommittee would consider modifying the Housing Summit guideline to include groups such as HIP. Ms. Mahany said they would be an integral part of the Sununit. MEMO 10/28/97 Councilman Leipzig asked that the Sununit include SAMCAR. He said Councilwoman La Berge's shared housing was a good idea, but, "we have to be careful about overcrowding. I can tell you that in my neighborhood down the block we have about eight cars with about twelve people living in a three bedroom place. Behind me we have a garage that is rented out with about four people in it. That is the extreme and we know that. But we have to be very careful when it comes to that. ... I know that the state and the government tell us what affordable housing is. I'm perfectly aware that there are formulas for that, but I always thought the lender was the one that told us what affordable housing was." Vice Mayor Howard asked that all service agencies be included in the Sununit.
