. , . . . -,
1. Staff report;
REPORT: Planning Commission recommendation, October 27, 1997
-
Ken Rolandelli, Chairman, Historical Resources Advisory Committee, said that the
Alhambra should be granted historical status based on its original usage as the
Alhambra Theater. He said the building was part of the "Redwood City Historical
Trail" published during the 1967 Centennial Celebration, and has been listed as a
historic resource inventory since 1976. He said the significance of the building is due
to the cultural and community events held there. Mr. Rolandelli said when it first
opened in 1896 it was the finest theater building between San Francisco and San Jose.
The architect, A. Page Brown, designed the San Francisco Ferry Building, the Palace
Hotel, the California Building in the 1893 Chicago Exposition, and he finished the
Filoli Estate. The Alhambra theater was the center of cultural and social activities in
Redwood City until the advent of motion pictures.
Using slides, the owner of the Alhambra, John Anagnostou, showed the interior of the
building and some of its original and beautiful features, many of which he has already
restored. He also described the structural work he has had done to bring the building
up to code, and showed the grand, hand hewn truss below the ceiling of the old theater
on the second floor. Mr. Anagnostou said he is negotiating to have a restaurant on the
ground floor, as the building used to be the Alhambra Theater and Bar. Mr.
Anagnostou described the work he has done with the owners of the adjoining building,
- the Oddfellows Lodge, and the future plans that will integrate both sides of the
building into a historic unit.
2. Open public hearing;
Mayor Hartnett opened the public hearing at 9:32 p.m.
3. Hear public comment;
Don Saye, 2021 Broadway, urged the Council to approve historic designation for the
Alhambra building.
4. Close public hearing;
MIS: LEIPZIGIRUSKIN TO CLOSE THE PUBLIC HEARING
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE AND THE HEARING CLOSED AT 9:34
P.M.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 97-201
-
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 OCTOBER 27,1997
MINUTES Page No. 629 PAGE 13
