. . , . .
D. Discuss past and future City Council priorities.
-- 1) Economic Development
Mayor Hartnett and Council Members suggested the following basic goals for
economic growth in Redwood City over the next two-years: 1) good inITastructure
(streets, roads etc.); 2) good community inITastructure (attractiveness, quality of life
issues); 3) positive business environment (not necessarily money, but favorable
policies); 4) enhance existing businesses; and 5) emphasize Redwood City's ideal
location.
Council Members discussed how important economic growth was to Redwood City,
and stressed Council commitment to the Downtown area, schools, and quality of life
issues which include the arts, historic preservation, and the proposed new location in
Redwood City of the San Mateo County Historical Museum.
Also discussed were the City/Chamber of Commerce Joint Economic Development
Strategies Study, the importance of code enforcement as a tool of economic growth,
sidewalk repair on Broadway, addressing the El Camino Real corridor, acknowledging
the City's inability to manage or control the marketplace, the need to raise money to
fund the Council's projects, and the impact good schools have on economic growth.
Facilitator Barbour isolated five specific goals the Council had identified for its
'- consideration over the next two years: the San Mateo County Historic Museum
located in Redwood city; improve sidewalks on Broadway; improvement of the El
Camino Real corridor; improved code enforcement; and monitoring the City/Chamber
Joint Economic Development Strategies Study.
MEMO 1/15/96
Council Members expressed unanimous support for the relocation of the San Mateo
Historical Museum to Downtown Redwood City, but expressed varying degrees of
support for funding that move. Councilwoman La Berge advised that City financial
support would provide the leverage to receive necessary grants. Mayor Hartnett asked
that the letter some Council Members received at home, be given to the City Clerk for
distribution to the whole Council.
MEMO 1/15/96
Councilman Claire asked that his colleagues, at some later date, consider the Port and
associated land use issues. He provided a history of the Port's revenues paid to the
City over the years, and stated that the City was receiving a very poor return on that
very valuable land. Councilman Claire added that the Port should be a viable business
experience to the City which owns the Port property. He recommended that the Port
property be incorporated into the overall plan for the City and not be viewed as a
separate entity.
--
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54 Redwood City Council Special Workshop Minutes
Page No. all January 13, 1996
Page 2
