President Wade described the presentations made to the Redwood City Elementary School
District Board and the Board's discussions. He expressed his Board's interest in Redwood City
2000 for its potential to be beneficial for communities and schools.
A. Opening remarks by Chairperson Daniela Devincenzi
Chairperson Devincenzi described how Redwood City 2000 had been the catalyst to
bring these three groups together, the Redwood City Council, Sequoia Union High School
District Board and the Redwood City Elementary School District Board, and expressed her
hope that they would continue to meet on a regular basis. She said this was the first step
and an example of what Redwood City 2000 is trying to do, bringing community and other
groups together to better utilize time, resources, efforts, and vision.
Chairperson Devincenzi explained the Healthy Community concept. She added that the
expressed purpose of this joint meeting was to provide a better understanding of what the
process would be for Redwood City 2000; a better understanding of the quality of life and
economic development issues; an understanding of the stakeholder involvement process;
suggestions for formulae; and to receive your input into the process.
Chairperson Devincenzi said that "this is NOT a Goals 2000 program. It is not." She
added that if anyone heard or read anything that gave anyone that perception, she needed
to know that, "because we have to take that out."
Chairperson Devincenzi described the benefits of the program: utilize resources better;
more cost effective as a whole community, incorporated and unincorporated areas of
Redwood City; proactive in responding to community issues; ability to build a sense of
community involving very diverse segments of the community; and to become a vehicle
for people to get involved - it will be their voice. She described the need for partnerships
in today's economy and its emergence as the best way to share resources to respond to
community needs in the broadest sense.
Chairperson Devincenzi encouraged everyone with questions to call her. She can be
reached through the Corinne Centeno, Assistant to the City Manager, 780-7302.
B.
